On the Path to Carbon Neutrality: Joint conference of the German Leopoldina and the Chinese CAS

Both Germany and China have set themselves the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in order to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement. This requires not only basic research and technical innovation, but also international cooperation and a global political framework. At a joint conference of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30, 2024 in Berlin-Adlershof, renowned experts from Germany and China will discuss innovative strategies for climate neutrality in both countries.

Leopoldina President Prof. (ETHZ) Dr. Gerald Haug, CAS President Prof. Dr. Jianguo Hou, the President of the Helmholtz Association Prof. Dr. Otmar Wiestler and the Vice President of the Max Planck Society Prof. Dr. Christian Doeller will give the opening address. Following the opening, the Presidents of the two National Academies will sign a joint declaration on carbon neutrality, the “Berlin Declaration: On the Path to Carbon Neutrality”.

Before the technical sessions begin, chemist and Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. Benjamin List from the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research and the former President of CAS and pioneer of Chinese nanotechnology research Prof. Dr. Chunli Bai will give keynote speeches. The four specialist sessions will discuss basic research as a source of innovation, the current status on the path to carbon neutrality, new technologies for achieving climate targets and the necessary market conditions and political control instruments. The speakers include physicist and Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. Klaus von Klitzing from the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, economist and Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, ecologist Prof. Dr. Bojie Fu, Professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, geologist and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena Prof. Dr. Susan Trumbore, the economists Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm from the Technical University of Nuremberg and Prof. Dr. Karen Pittel, Director of the ifo Center for Energy, Climate and Resources in Munich, as well as the geologist and paleoclimatologist Prof. Dr. Zhengtang Guo, Professor at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at CAS.

The moderators include chemist Prof. Dr. Peter H. Seeberger, Director at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, and physicist Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer, former Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

In an article in the Leopoldina newsletter, chemist Prof. Dr. Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, Professor of Physical Chemistry at Bielefeld University, and physicist Prof. Dr. Harald Fuchs, Director of the Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Münster, talk about the necessity of cooperation with China. Both Leopoldina members are members of the organizing committee.

The conference is aimed at a technically interested public and is free of charge. The conference language is English.

As part of a cooperation between the research group of Dr. Jianbei Huang and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, a meeting with representatives of CAS will take place at the MPI for Biogeochemistry from October 30 to November 3rd, 2024.
