Workshop: Modeling Carbon Dynamics using Compartmental Systems and SoilR

During this 3-day workshop, participants will learn about using R Package SoilR to implement dynamic models of carbon in ecosystems and soils using different sets of observations. This workshop will focus particularly on the use of observations to parameterize models and obtain timescales of C cycling in ecosystems.

Participants should bring their own datasets and have a clear research question they want to answer. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to have implemented their own model parameterized with their own data, addressing the initial question.

Types of datasets that are expected include, but are not limited to, 1) carbon stocks and respiration fluxes for specific sites, 2) soil organic matter fractions with radiocarbon values, 3) time series of soil respiration and GPP, 4) depth-profile radiocarbon values, among others.

A preliminary agenda for the workshop is presented below:

Day Activity
Day 1 Introduction to SoilR and compartmental dynamical systems
Participants introduce their datasets and research questions
  Conceptual model design and implementation
Day 2 Preliminary model runs
  Model parameterization
Day 3 Computation of age and transit time distributions
  Modeling of radiocarbon dynamics

The workshop will take place between March 13th and 17th, 2023, at Umeå University, Sweden.

In preparation for the workshop, participants should have installed a recent version of R, and RStudio. In addition, the development version of SoilR should be installed in advance following the instructions in this <a href https://github.com/MPIBGC-TEE/SoilR> link</a>.
