Research interests:

My overarching goal is to better understand inter-annual to long-term variability in the global carbon-cycle. To do this, my research bridges the disciplines of atmospheric science, ecology and biogeochemistry, from both observation-based and modelling perspectives. Specific topics include land-atmosphere interactions, the role of internal climate variability and ocean-atmosphere-land teleconnections in controlling carbon-cycle dynamics, the impacts of climate extremes on ecosystem functioning and ecosystem disturbance regimes.

Recent Highlights:

I contributed to the "10 New Insights in Climate Science 2021", published during the COP26. The 10 New Insights in Climate Science series is highlights each year the most pressing research findings and emerging scientific insights to help inform immediate and equitable transformations across sectors to preserve a safe and habitable planet.

New paper in the Special Issue "Understanding compound weather and climate events and related impacts" in ESD Temperate biomes in Europe are not prone to recurrent dry and hot conditions in summer. However, these conditions may become more frequent in the coming decades. Because stress conditions can leave legacies for many years, this may result in reduced ecosystem resilience under recurrent stress. We assess vegetation vulnerability to the hot and dry summers in 2018 and 2019 in Europe and find the important role of inter-annual legacy effects from 2018 in modulating the impacts of the 2019 event.


I am currently co-leading the ‘REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes’, phase 2 (RECCAP-2) project, which is part of the Global Carbon Project. RECCAP-2 will make use of regional cuts of annually updated global terrestrial and ocean carbon models, and atmospheric CO2 inversions, taking stock of new satellite-based surface monitoring products of climate and ecological variables to synthesise regional GHG budgets, contributing to the Global Stocktake Process.

I am also PI in the project from ESA-CCI aimed at supporting RECCAP-2 (CCI RECCAP2).
