- Earth System Network of Integrated Modelling and Assessment (ENIGMA)
This is a joint research project of MPI for Biogeochemsitry, MPI for Meteorology, MPI for Chemistry, and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research to bridge the current gap between the traditional modelling of physical-chemical components of the Earth system and the modelling of the biosphere. The goal is to quantitatively understand biospheric control mechanisms of climate and how they are affected by the numerous and strong human influences on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. At the core of the project is the development of a comprehensive Earth system model, in which the representation of ecosystem feedbacks will be improved. CCDAS leads the work package on data assimilation.
- Operational Global Carbon Observing System (Geocarbon). The main objective of this project is to coordinate the contribution of European and international leading research institutes toward the development of an Operational Global Integrated Carbon Observation and Analysis System. Amongst others, the specific objectives are: i) to provide an aggregated set of harmonized global carbon data information (integrating the land, ocean, atmosphere and human dimension); ii) to develop improved Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation Systems (CCDAS); and iii) to define the specifications for an operational Global Carbon Observing System.
- Initial Training Network on global biosphere-climate interactions (Greencycles II), a project to advance understanding of the impacts of climate-biogeochemistry feedbacks on the evolution of the Earth system over the coming decades. CCDAS leads the work package on data and benchmarking, and sets a focus on the evaluation and benchmarking of terrestrial biosphere models.
