Currently there are some collaborative studies being undertaken with other institutions involved in the development of new spaceborne sensors. In particular:

  • Institute of Atmospheric Physics, DLR: Modelling work to support the development of an active lidar-based methane mission, MERLIN, supported by the German and French space agencies (DLR/CNES). Regional modelling studies are also being undertaken to assess the representativity of the extremely small footprint of the active sensor, and to aid in the planning of a flight campaign (CoMet, on board the DLR research aircraft HALO) to test the airborne version of the sensor, CHARME-F. The MERLIN mission is also supported through input to the Scientific Advisory Group.
  • Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen: Modelling work in support of the development of CarbonSat, one of the two candidates to be ESA's Earth Explorer 8. This involves regional modelling to assess the capacity to monitor point sources of methane and carbon dioxide from space, as well as a study to assess the benefit of simultaneously measuring fluorescence and XCO2 to constrain biogenic carbon fluxes.
