    • Value of macroecological approaches in the analysis of ecosystem functioning (incl. trait data, functional diversity)

    • Time series analysis: spatiotemporal environmental data
    • Nonlinear dimensionality reduction (e.g. for vegetation data, remote sensing data)

Actual projects and initiatives:

BACI: Detecting changes in essential ecosystem and biodiversity properties - towards a Biosphere Atmosphere Change Index project is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (2015-2019); Scientific coordination of the consortium.

The Earth System Data Lab project (successor of the Coupled Atmosphere-Biospher virtual LAB project) funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) (2017-2020); Scientific coordination of the consortium.

DAMOCLES: Understanding and modeling compound climate and weather events (e.g. hazards such as floods, wildfires, heatwaves, and droughts resulting from a combination of interacting processes. This is a COST action facilitating exchange among scholars; MC Member for Germany; Leader of WG3 "A meta-database of impact data".

The TRUSTEE project is a Mari Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (2017-2020) designed to train a new generation of scientists with complementary and interdisciplinary skills in ecosystem modelling, plant physiology, and remote sensing. Co-PI.

The Platform for Ecological Analyses on Colombian Ecosystems PEACE is an initiative by Colombian scientists to develop a sustainable concept for monitoring Colombian ecosystems in the post-conflict era. Initial fundunding by the BMBF, ESA, an iLEAPS have made this possible. Future work in tandem with GEO-BON Colombia and relevant projects has started.


iLEAPS is a Global Research Project of Future Earth providing understanding of how interacting physical, chemical and biological processes transport and transform energy and matter through the land-atmosphere interface. Since 2018 I am member of the Scientific Steering Commitee.

The BON Colombia is one of the regional hubs of the Group of Earth Observations - Biodiversity Observation Network; GEO BON. I participate in this initiative since 2017 to promote the use of a regional Earth Observations Cubes.
