The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute, which currently employs around 250 people, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena is known for high-tech industry, internationally renowned research institutions and a modern university, but it also has a beautiful natural setting in the green Saale valley with steep limestone slopes. For the department of Biogeochemical Processes we are looking for a Scientific Programmer (m/f/d) in part time, limited to 2 years.

Background and position description

Scientific programmer for the ATTO project. ATTO (Amazon Tall Tower Observatory) is a large German-Brazilian project to study the interactions of the Amazon forest with the atmosphere and climate. Within the framework of the project, large amount of data are collected and shared via the ATTO data portal between the Project members and ultimately to the general public.

Your tasks

  • Support the data management team in scientific programming and project-specific technical development of the ATTO Data Portal in close cooperation with the BExIS development team and the project coordination team
  • Further development of database features in close cooperation with the participating researchers and the BExIS development team
  • Technical support of the database server

Your profile

  • MSc in computer science, bioinformatics, physics, meteorology, or related discipline
  • Basic knowledge of research data management
  • Experience in programming languages and relevant software (C Sharp, Svelte, SQL, BExIS 2.0, Postgres, MS Visual Studio, versioning tools)
  • Experience in supporting Windows servers and using internet information services
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills

Part-time work is generally possible. The position will be evaluated and graded following the collective agreement according to TVöD Bund; in addition, we will provide a pension plan based on the public service (VBL).
