Ecosystem-atmosphere interactions and nature-based climate solutions

Eddy covariance (EC) measurement systems provide direct and continuous observation of greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere. Nature-based climate solution (NCS) is an efficient and effective strategy to utilize natural ecosystems to sequester more carbon or reduce GHG emissions. However, due to the complexity of operating an EC system and the high cost of installing a tower, most EC stations are located in developed countries and in ecosystems with easier access. With this limitation, the potential of certain NCS can not be quantified using the best possible technique (e.g., EC). Thus, this workshop brings together experts at mixed career stages to exchange research experience using EC and discuss the possibility of collaboration. We aim to draft a framework that could leverage the integration of ecosystem-scale flux measurements to fully consider biophysical and biogeochemical dynamics of different ecosystems.
