Sources and sinks of carbon monoxide in tropical forests
Carbon monoxide plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry and is a useful tracer of biomass burning. Elevated carbon monoxide concentrations over the Amazon reflect a strong signal from forest fires during the dry season, as well as diffuse background emissions from within ecosystem processes. Whilst the processes driving these diffuse emissions are broadly known, there are few data quantifying ecosystem and component level carbon monoxide fluxes in tropical forests. Here I will discuss what we know about the carbon monoxide cycle of Amazonian tropical forests drawing on tower and flux chamber measurements made at the Amazon Tall Tower observatory.
