EO LINCS: Towards integrated use of multiple Earth Observation (EO) datasets for land carbon cycle studies
Land ecosystems play a central role in carbon–climate feedbacks and their interannual and long-term variability. Yet, the land carbon exchange remains one of the largest sources of uncertainty. Observational data from site level measurements to remote sensing Earth Observations (EO) have, therefore, been instrumental in understanding and modeling the carbon cycle. There are, however, inherent differences in the observations from the perspectives of ecosystem processes, the domain of measurements, instruments and sensors, and the characteristics of measured variables, as well as the methods of mapping them to a grid. Due to these differences, careful integration of diverse observations and their processing is needed within and across different carbon cycle applications, especially considering the growth in the availability of EO data streams. Under the ESA Carbon Science Cluster, the EO LINCS (Earth Observation – Local and Integrated data eNquiry for Terrestrial Carbon Science) project (July 2024 – June 2026) aimed to promote a community effort towards an integrated understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle. In particular, EO LINCS identifies methods and technologies to harmonize, exploit, and link diverse data sources and streams across spatial and temporal scales to better understand the land carbon cycle. This talk will present the EO LINCS data pipelines and the lessons learned regarding the use of these pipelines for accessing multiple observational datasets, as well as their impacts on improving data usage in terrestrial carbon cycle studies through four case studies.
