Workshop on ecological monitoring in Colombia November 21, 2016 International workshop on the design of an ecological observatory system for Colombia During the 5-day workshop in Medellín, Colombia, project participants will meet to identify data streams, computer models, and other resources necessary for the implementation of an ecological observatory system that facilitates scientific research. One key objective would be to quantify essential climate variables ECVs and essential biodiversity variables EBVs. In addition, other components of ecosystem functioning such as land-atmosphere interactions will be addressed within the context of the observatory network. At the end of the workshop we expect to have not only the list of the main data and computation resources, but also a long-term planning for funding and implementation of the observaroty system. The EOS project, funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research, has the aim of designing a potential monitoring system for Colombian ecosystems. Workshop: Modeling Soil Organic Matter Dynamics Using Radiocarbon and SoilR October 10, 2016 During this 5-day workshop, participants will learn about using R Package SoilR to implement soil organic matter dynamic models using different sets of observations. This workshop will focus particularly on the use of radiocarbon to parameterize models. Participants must bring their own datasets and have a clear research question they want to answer. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to have implemented their own model parameterized with their own data, addressing the initial question. Types of datasets that are expected include, but are not limited to, 1) carbon stocks and respiration fluxes for specific sites, 2) soil organic matter fractions with radiocarbon values, 3) time series of soil respiration from incubation experiments that include isotopic values, 4) depth-profile radiocarbon values, among others. For questions and participation requests, please send an email to Carlos A. Sierra (csierra@bgc-jena.mpg.de). Workshop | ![]() |

Autumn school on “Dynamics of natural (eco)systems: theory and applications” September 26, 2016 The program features a unique combination of theoretical courses, practical hands-on sessions, and social events. Participants will learn how to model and discover patterns in real-world data obtained from ecological and biological systems, how to assess the system’s stability, and how to reason about unusual events. Radiocarbon in Ecology and Earth System Science July 24, 2016 In collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry and the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society, Northern Arizona University, the University of California, Irvine, will give a radiocarbon short course. Participant will learn about the use of radiocarbon in ecology and Earth system science. Hands-on activities will focus on creating a tracer-free lab environment and avoiding contamination in the field and lab, collecting samples in the field, choosing standards and blanks, processing and analyzing samples in the laboratory, and analyzing and interpreting radiocarbon data.
