Planning, development and construction for research

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry has two modern in-house workshops for mechanics and electronics.
In close dialogue with the scientists, individual parts, entire assemblies and experimental set-ups are planned and built in the workshops, either as custom-made products or as modified versions of commercially available instruments and devices. The service also includes their installation, maintenance and repair.

With their many years of expertise, the staff of the workshops contributes to the implementation of numerous research projects (selection):

  • Experiments: biodiversity exploratories, aircraft measurements, growth chambers for isotopic labelling of plant material, QUASOM, Shadow-roofs for trees, drought stress experiment for trees.
  • Measuring instruments: Picarro (IAGOS), Soil respiration chambers (QUASOM), Dendrometer (IMECC), 14C (ACES/UGCS), Light sensor, sampler prototype, tree respiration chambers, climate regulation measuring gas.
  • Measuring containers and towers: Namibia, Zotino Tall Tower (ZOTTO), Cap Verde, FTIR container
  • Measuring stations: Cap Verde, Zotino Tall Tower (ZOTTO), Hainich
