New Max Planck Partner Group investigates GHG budgets in India

Top-down estimation of regional sources and sinks of greenhouse gases over the Indian subcontinent constrained by atmospheric observations and modeling

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER-B), India, and Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), Jena, Germany

The Max Planck Society supports a new Partner Group between the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), Jena, Germany, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER-B), India. Key personnel include Assistant Professor Dr. Dhanyalekshmi K. Pillai, former Postdoc at MPI-BGC, as the Head of the Partner Group, Prof. Dr. Markus Reichstein as the responsible Director of MPI-BGC, and group leaders Dr. Christoph Gerbig and Dr. Julia Marshall as the scientific collaboration partners in the Biogeochemical Systems Department of MPI-BGC.

The partner group is initially supported for a period of three years. Its program aims at implementing and further developing a high-resolution inversion framework to quantify CO2 and CH4 sources and sinks that are consistent with atmospheric observations. The focus will be on the Indian subcontinent, a critically important and rapidly changing region undergoing rapid development. The IISER-B team will lead the proposed work with the guidance of modeling, measurement and remote sensing experts in the Biogeochemical Systems Department of the MPI-BGC.
