Scientific discussion meeting organised by Professor Yadvinder Malhi, Dr Rosie A. Fisher, Dr Luiz E.O. Aragão and Dr Lucy Rowland.
The El Niño of 2015/2016 was one of the strongest tropical climate events for a century. This meeting will gather an international and multidisciplinary community of scientists to describe and understand how the terrestrial tropics responded to the El Niño, and what this can tell us about future stability of the tropics and the global carbon cycle under climate change.

This conference, organised by l'Academie de l'air et de l'espace, concentrates on certain key components of climate study such as observation of the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere from space, especially greenhouse gases, aiming to emphasise the importance of space observatories for monitoring climate and to encourage exchanges between scientists, agencies and industry.

The main objectives of the workshop were presenting current work related to the ATTO site and plan future joint research at and around ATTO. The workshop participants agreed to produce a new science plan that integrates research on energy, water, aerosols, and greenhouse gases exchange between the central Amazon forests and the atmosphere, and explores the role of volatile organics and trace gases on cloud formation and atmospheric chemistry. Over the next 20 years, ATTO scientists aim at providing new knowledge on the role of the Amazon forest in the global climate system and its response to changing climate.

The Autumn School will support the training of young scientists building the next generation’s researcher in the growing field of data assimilation in biogeochemical cycle science. It will be organised as a 6-day long school with two 1.5 hours blocks of lectures in the morning and two 1.5 hours blocks of exercises in the afternoon. Topics to be covered include biogeochemical cycles in the Earth System, modelling of dynamical systems, data assimilation methods and its application in biogeochemical modelling. Students have the opportunity to present their work during a poster session. The school is mainly oriented at Early Career Scientists (i.e. experienced PhD students and young scientist within their first PostDoc) with a maximum of 40 participants.
