Wir trauern um unseren langjährigen Mitarbeiter, Freund und Kollegen Gerhard Bönisch, der am 6. Mai 2024 im Alter von 62 Jahren nach langer, schwerer Krankheit verstarb.
Wir haben ein neues auswärtiges Mitglied gewonnen: Prof. Dr. Christian Wirth wurde vom Senat der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft auf Antrag des Instituts zu dessen Auswärtigem Wissenschaftlichen Mitglied ernannt. Als ehemaliger Gruppenleiter und später Fellow am MPI-BGC hat Prof. Wirth den Aufbau der TRY Datenbank initiiert und unterstützt.
Infomationslücken in globalen Karten zu Pflanzenmerkmalen können mit Daten aus Naturbestimmungsapps geschlossen werden. Nutzer der App iNaturalist helfen der Forschung maßgeblich, globale Karten von Pflanzenmerkmalen zu erstellen. Die neuen Karten bilden unter anderem eine verbesserte Grundlage für das Verständnis von Pflanzen-Umwelt -Interaktionen und zur Erdsystemmodellierung.
Einem internationalen Forschungsteam gelang es, global wirkende Faktoren zu erkennen, die die Vielfalt der Formen und Funktionen von Pflanzen hervorrufen. Forschenden trugen weltweit Pflanzendaten zusammen und konnten erstmalig für Merkmale wie Größe, Aufbau und Lebensspanne der Pflanzen zeigen, wie stark diese durch Klima- und Bodeneigenschaften bestimmt werden.
Eine neue Studie, geleitet von der Universität von Wyoming (UW) unter Beteiligung des MPI-BGC beleuchtet diese Beziehung von Pflanzeneigenschaften und Umweltbedingungen mit dem Fokus auf Eigenschaften der Wurzeln und stellt die Natur ökologischer Trade-offs in Frage.
Die Gestalt des Wurzelgeflechts einer Pflanze hängt häufig stark von der Symbiose mit Pilzen ab. Dies fand eine internationale Forschungsgruppe unter Beteiligung des Max-Planck-Institut für Biogeochemie heraus.
Am 29. Februar wurde die Zahl von 1 Milliarde Merkmalsdatensätzen, die von der iDiv-Forschungsplattform TRY geliefert wurden, geknackt. Diese 2007 gegründete Open-Access-Datenbank ist zur wichtigsten Quelle für Pflanzeneigenschaften geworden, die von der Forschungsgemeinschaft weltweit genutzt werden.
Die neuste und verbesserte fünfte Version der TRY-Datenbank (www.try-db.org) wurde am 26. März 2019 veröffentlicht. Im Vergleich zur vierten Version aus dem Jahr 2017 ist die Anzahl der Merkmalseinträge in der TRY-Datenbank von damals etwa 7 auf fast 12 Millionen gestiegen, die Anzahl der erfassten Pflanzenarten von 148.000 auf fast 280.000 bei rund 400.000 existierenden Arten.
