The German Centre for integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig in cooperation with Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Max-Plack Institute for Biogeochemistry seeks to fill the position of a:

Student / Research Assistant (m/f/d)

Annotation of herbarium specimen images

  • Commencing on 01 September 2022 or at the earliest opportunity for a duration of up to 4-5 months.
  • Mini-Job, work volume depending on your availability.
  • Place of work: Jena, FUSION group at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Background:

The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National Research Centre funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in this emerging field. It is jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the University of Leipzig (UL), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The project:

The position is affiliated with the project "Analysis of automatic extraction of leaf trait values from digitized herbarium specimen images using computer vision technologies." in the FUSION group of Univ. Prof. Dr König-Ries, Birgitta at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The FUSION group is highly interdisciplinary and diverse, working towards building better biodiversity platforms and tools. Your tasks:

  • Annotate image data for training Deep Learning models
  • Annotation pipeline: Pre and post-processing of the data
  • You will get a chance to work with Machine Learning and Deep Learning

Your profile:

  • Student in the fields of biology, ecology, computer science, mathematics or natural sciences
  • Experience with Python programming language
  • Prior knowledge of Data Science is a plus
  • Capable of working independently
  • Willingness to learn new skills and technologies in a short time
  • Fluency in English and good communication skills
