Christian Wirth

Head of the Research Group

Christian Wirth is Max-Planck-Fellow and head of the research group. He is head of the Department of Systematic Botany and Functional Biodiversity and the Botanical Garden at the University of Leipzig. As founding director and member of the speaker council of iDiv - the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research - his interest is dedicated to the many aspects of biological diversity.

Jens Kattge

Group Leader

Jens Kattge coordinates the TRY initiative. He is interested in the diversity of plant characteristics, how this is related to ecosystem function at local to global scales and how this is represented in large-scale ecosystem models.

Research Scientist

After graduating from MSc. Information Engineering and Computer Science, (Olee) Hoi Ying Lam joined the team to contribute in the development of an R package for the TRY database.

Gerhard Bönisch

Scientific Data Manager

Gerhard Bönisch is responsible for the development and management of the TRY database and website. In addition he is managing data for various scientific projects and laboratories. He is jointly affiliated to the Department of Biogeochemical Integration at the MPI-BGC. Gerhard holds a PhD in Physics.

Angela Günther

Database Assistant

Angela Günther works on the consolidation of categorical traits in the context of the TRY database. Angela holds a Diploma in Biology.

Vamsi Krishna Kommineni

PhD Student

Vamsi studied Scientific Instrumentation at FH Jena and did his Master thesis in the group on evaluating global patterns of leaf size using machine learning approaches. Now he is continuing a PhD thesis on the same topic.

Pramod Baddam

Researcher

Pramod studied Scientific Instrumentation at FH Jena and did his Master thesis in the group on disentangling temporal and spatial environmental effects on leaf size. Now he contributes to the identification of original data references for the TRY database.

  • David Schöne now works at the University of Jena and is still responsible for administrating BEXIS instances at the MPI-BGC.
  • Julia Joswig continues her PhD at the University of Zurich, URPP Global Change and Biodiversity.
  • Gabriel Walther has finished his internship and is now PhD student at the University of Jena, Department for Biodiversity of Plants.
  • Talie Musavi has finished her PhD and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department Biogeochemical Integration at the MPI-BGC, exploring ecosystem stability regarding its structural and biological properties.
  • Ulrike Stahl PhD student in the group and PostDoc in the project 'Plant Trait Semantics', has left the research group to take a position at the Julius Kühn-Institut in Quedlinburg, Germany
  • Daniel Marra has finished his PhD and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department Biogeochemical Processes at the MPI-BGC. His working address is at the University of Leipzig, Germany
  • Marie-Angélique Laporte, PostDoc in the project 'Plant Trait Semantics', has left the research group to take a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Bioversity International in Montpellier, France
  • Franziska Schrodt, PostDoc in the project 'iTRY', has left the research group to take a Senior Lectureship at the University of Nottingham, UK
  • Roland Moews, PhD in mathematics, has supported the group 2014 in the context of statistical evaluations of different methods to fill gaps in the TRY database.
