Henrik Hartmann honored for his scientific achievements at the IUFRO World Congress
The World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) took place in Stockholm from 23 to 29 June 2024. On June 24, Prof. Dr. Henrik Hartmann, Institute Director of the Julius Kühn Institute for Forest Protection and former group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, received an important award for his scientific achievements in the field of forestry.
Prof. Dr. Henrik Hartmann, head of the JKI Forest Conservation Institute and former scientific group leader at the MPI for Biogeochemistry in Jena, received the "Scientific Achievement Award" for his scientific achievements in forest research at the 26th World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in Stockholm. The award was presented to him by IUFRO President John Parrotta.
Henrik Hartmann's career began in Canada as a forester. He wanted to better understand what he saw and experienced there and therefore switched to research. Since then, he has been striving to answer his questions about the forest: What factors control how trees allocate their photosynthesis products to growth, respiration, energy storage or defense? What changes when plants are stressed? How do these changes weaken the trees, making them more susceptible to disease and even death?
With his research group at the MPI for Biogeochemistry, he has helped to understand the role of storage reserves under stress and for tree mortality, and to elucidate plant priorities in the allocation of storage and defense functions over growth in times of limited carbon resources.
Henrik Hartmann is also actively involved in IUFRO: he actively approached and brought together researchers to found the IUFRO Task Force on Tree Mortality and the International Tree Mortality Network Initiative.
