Current Research Interests

Currently I am studying the influence of plant diversity on soil organic matter in the framework of The Jena Experiment. The positive biodiversity effect of plant species richness on carbon storage in soils was already shown by members of our working group Molecular Biogeochemistry (e.g. Steinbeiss et al. 2008). Now, I am investigating the underlying mechanisms of this positive effect. Doing this, I am analysing long-term data of soil organic carbon and dissolved organic carbon, sampled from the establishment of the experimental side in 2002 up to now. The main focus of my study is to investigate the impact of plant diversity on soil microbial communities and how this interplay affects the soil carbon cycling, i.e. uptake and storage related processes as well as carbon decomposition processes.
