2.  The instructor

Dr. Matthias Schwarzkopf counsels students and scientists in all relevant questions concerning their careers. He has been responsible for supporting the appointing procedure of new professors at Jena University, has been head of LehreLernen – the training centre for university teachers – and has done recruitment for private businesses. He has founded together with colleagues out of public administration and private businesses.


3.  Description

The objective of the workshop is to help doctoral candidates and post-docs with their time management. We will reflect on the critical aspects, difficulties and ideas on the improvement of time and self management will be discussed.


  1. Basics: for a good time and self management, it is necessary to consider various areas of life as a whole not separately and to consider their mutual influence between each other. The current situation of each participant will be analyzed: What time budgets are available in which areas of life and which are necessary? What is the amount of time spent on what during an average week?
  2. Strategies of time planning: Various planning tools and time management methods are introduced to the participants and they will try out which tools are most suitable.
  3. Typical Problems of researchers with regard to time management: This includes inaccurate goal setting, imprecise expectations, not predictable duration for the achievement of results, etc. During this part the participants will reflect on the difficulties and who they can be avoided.
  4. Motivation / demotivation / procrastination / distraction: A common problem of people who work self-responsible within a longer period of time, are times of demotivation, distraction or procrastination. During this part of the workshop we will identify motivation methods. E.g. how can motivation be established in challenging situations and how can disturbance be avoided?
  5. Research / career / family etc.: Everything under one roof: In the end we will clarify how to make different areas of life more compatible.
