Projects and Initiatives
The BGI department forms part of various international research projects in the field of e.g. Artificial intelligence and Machine learning, carbon, water and nutrient cycles, Earth System Dynamics and modelling, Extreme Events, Remote sensing and Earth Observation, experimental field and lab studies. The department has coordinated FP7, H2020, ESA and other projects and, is participating in numerous H2020, DFG, DLR and ERC projects such as e.g.DeepCube (Big data technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Copernicus), E-SHAPE, Myriad-EU, USMILE and XAIDA. It forms part of the Biodiversity Exploratories, Flora Incognita, NFDI4Earth and coordinates the Project Office BIOMASS and the Future Earth, IRDR, WCRP and WWRP Knowledge-Action Network on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events. Together with FSU Jena the BGI Department coordinates the ELLIS Jena Unit to combine fundamental development in machine learning with challenges concerning spatio-temporal environmental and climate dynamics for a better understanding of the Earth system and its components.
