2021
November 2021
New preprint from our PhD student Sinikka Paulus on the analysis of the large weighing lysimeter time series in Majadas. If you are interested in small, regular water inputs to semi-arid ecosystems check out the submission under the following link. The work has been prepared as a joint effort with many BAIE members and of course our spanish colleagues.
October 2021
We have another member during the next year! Philipp Morgen started last week and will help us during the next year in the field and the laboratory. Welcome Philipp!
Fingerprints prevailing meteorological conditions, lysimeter weight changes and the assigned fluxes. Find all the details in Figure 2 of the preprint from Paulus et al. here
September 2021
Mirco Migliavacca and colleagues (including BGC and BAIE) just published the paper: The three major axes of terrestrial ecosystem function in Nature. A great contribution to ecosystem research on a global scale. Congratulations!
New paper out from the work of Javier Pacheco and our visiting Scientist Khelvi Biriukova (and many other collaborators and members of BGI)! Find more about their work on Performance of Singular Spectrum Analysis in Separating Seasonal and Fast Physiological Dynamics of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence and PRI Optical Signals in JGR Biogeosciences.
Sinikka Paulus was awarded for her contribution on "Sub-daily condensation dynamics and their role for water and energy budgets in a dryland ecosystem" at the 19th International Swiss Climate School from the Center for Climate Systems Modeling (ETH). Congratulations!
The BAIE group wants to say goodbye to Mirco Migliavacca our group leader until 31.08.2021. It was a great time and experience to work together with you (which will be continued in the future of course). We wish you all the best for your new position at the JRC in Ispra.
August 2021
We say goodbye this month to our guest Ladislav Sigut who stayed with us the whole last year as visiting PostDoc, working on foodprint heterogeneity of Eddy Covariance data. He is now returning to his home institution Czech Globe. It was a pleasure to us to have you here, looking forward to see you again in the future! The good news is, that Qian Zhang who also stayed with us last year as visiting PostDoc, is back and will continue to work with us on Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Observation! Welcome back!
In the weeks of July 5, 2021 to July 16, 2021 various BAIE members (and other institute members) participated in an outdoor first aid course and rescuing from height. The three to four day long course took place in Schieferpark close to Lehesten and at the long term eddy covariance station Wetzstein. The members learned theory and practice of helping friends and colleagues in the field in case of accidents. And more importantly what measures to take to avoid such accidents to happen.
June 2021
First PhD paper of Wantong Li published in Geophysical Research Letters: Revisiting Global Vegetation Controls Using Multi‐Layer Soil Moisture. In collaboration with René Orth, Sophia Walther, Matthias Forkel, Markus Reichstein and Mirco Migliavacca. Congrats Wantong!
Global transpiration data from sap flow measurements: the SAPFLUXNET database. Great work coordinated by Rafael Poyatos et al., which include also data from Majadas and La Albuera.
New experimental site installed in Reusel (Netherlands) for the Land Carbon Constellation Project. Thanks Freiland!
May 2021
Lot's of media attention on the latest paper of Tarek S. El-Madany in collaboration with many people from our BAIE-community. Find the original paper on How Nitrogen and Phosphorus Availability Change Water Use Efficiency in a Mediterranean Savanna Ecosystem or choose between english AGU Science news, and german summaries covered by MPG news and the Initiative Wissenschaftsjahr.
While most of us were at EGU - other members of the BAIE Group and Freiland went to a two-week fieldwork to Majadas de Tieter to install a passive L-Band microwave radiometer (ELBARA) together with tree water content-, tree temperature- plus leaf wetness-, temperature, and relative humidity sensors at the surface of the herbaceous layer. This instrumental effort is part of the LCC (Land Carbon Constallation project (link to the homepage)).
Our visiting group member Quian Zhang together with Javier Pacheco published an article on Ground-Based Multiangle Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Observation and Angular Normalization for Assessing Crop Productivity. If you wanna learn more about angular effects on SIF and how normalization of both red and far-red SIF measurements improved correlation of SIF with GPP find all the information open access.
Successful PhD defense of Yunpeng
On Friday 26.03.2021, Yunpeng Luo successfully defended his PhD thesis on "Unexplored drivers of plant phenology: Beyond climate"! Congratulations Yunpeng! We are all very happy, proud and moved at the same time about having been part of this stage of life of yours and wish you warmly all the best for your very near future as PostDoc at ETH Zurich!
Meet the BAIE group members at EGU 2021:
(and some more second author contributions which you can find on the individual websites)
We would be happy to present to you the latest stage of our research! See you in April!
March 2021:
On 01.03.2021 at 22:00 CET, Javi will participate in Spanish TV - "El Cambio Climático son los padres" (Climate change is the parents). The show will be openly broadcasted at the indicated time here . So, if you like to enjoy some of our research results presented in Spanish - feel invited to watch live online (no account necessary) or find it permanently under this link.
Another article in collaboration with Amnon Cochavi, Dan Yakir and many others on the joint use of COS, SIF and active fluorescence to understand vegetation dynamics under extreme events.
February 2021:
This nice interview with Tarek just came out in the Fluxnet community blog, giving a great overview about his research using eddy covariance and his career path.
Our former student Ekaterina successfully published the results of her Masters thesis and internship within the BAIE team. You can find the results about Using terrestrial laser scanning for characterizing tree structural parameters and their changes under different management in a Mediterranean open woodland in Forest Ecology and Management.
Last but not least, we have another publication by Javier about senSCOPE: Modeling mixed canopies combining green and brown senesced leaves. Evaluation in a Mediterranean Grassland. Feel always free to contact us for the manuscript in case you cannot access.
January 2021:
Happy New Year everyone!
As always the year begins with EGU abstract submission deadline on January 13th. This years EGU will be fully online again - nevertheless we are looking forward to seeing you and your work in April this year - hopefully in our session.
Abstracts welcome for our Session BG3.21 Emerging constraints of photosynthesis (including chlorophyll fluorescence), respiration, and transpiration at ecosystem to global scales with Karolina Sakowska, Mirco Migliavacca and Markus Reichstein among the Conveners!
