New Max Planck Tandem group in Colombia
A new Max Planck Tandem group, led by Prof. Dr. Stijn Hantson at Universidad del Rosario, Columbia, has been initiated end of last year. The research group will study the impact of fire in the Earth System. The Tandem Group studies the impacts of fires at a local to global scale, ranging from detailed studies on how fires impact sensitive tropical ecosystems, such as paramos, an alpine tundra ecosystems located in the Andes Mountain Range, to the impact of fire extremes across the globe.
The group uses remotely sensed data to understand fire occurrence and their ecosystem impact, in combination with simulations performed by global fire-vegetation models. The Tandem group will lead the proposed work in cooperation and with guidance of modeling, measurement and remote sensing experts in the Biogeochemical Signals Department of the MPI-BGC.
