IT Service Group

We support institute members and guest researchers with all scientific and general IT matters and offer a wide range of services.

Our team of six maintains the institute's central information and data processing systems, ensuring the operation of central IT services, the network, and central data storage. We are also responsible for managing IT equipment, such as PCs and laptops, as well as providing user support.

The tasks of the IT group

  • Operating the central IT systems.
  • Securing the IT infrastructure against technical malfunctions and other security risks.
  • Supporting the scientific departments, administration and service groups in optimising IT-supported processes.
  • Operating an HPC cluster.
  • Advising on the procurement of new computers and network devices.
  • Managing client devices, such as PCs and laptops, throughout their entire lifecycle, from procurement to disposal.
  • Providing support to users with hardware and software problems.

Network

A network based on fibre optic and copper cables provides sufficient connection options at the institute's main campus and to external locations. The backbone and the internet connection are designed to be redundant. WLAN, including Eduroam (Education Roaming), is available on the main campus.

Services

We provide a wide range of traditional IT services, such as email and web servers. In addition, we assist our users in creating and operating research-specific services, e.g. specialised databases and high-performance computing.

IT Security

One of the most important issues is protecting data against loss, falsification and unauthorised access. To this end, we use special technical systems such as virus filters and firewalls, but we also work to improve organisational processes, raise awareness, and provide training to our users.

User support

A key responsibility of the IT department is providing day-to-day support for IT-related issues. To this end, we use a professional request tracking system to process requests as quickly as possible.

Further information for institute members is provided by our MAX intranet pages.
