Current climate change scenarios predict an increase in air temperature, a shift of precipitation to the winter months and longer dry periods in summer in Central Europe. These changes are already causing large forest damage due to tree mortality as observed after the prolonged drought in 2018. Current forest management approaches encourage the establishment of drought-resistant native tree species, but also consider alternative non-native tree species to ensure long-term viability in the face of climate change. For this reason, regeneration plots with non-native tree species have been established in recent years as cultivation trials. In this study, we tested the drought sensitivity of a group of non-native tree species growing in mixed stands in southern Germany.
