The BIOMASS Mission - perspectives

The BIOMASS mission is the 7th Earth Explorer mission from ESA. Already conceptualised twenty years ago, BIOMASS still presents an observational unprecedented which may be able for the first time to resolve the saturation effect in high stock density forests. These measurements will both provide more precise quantification of above-ground biomass stocks in the tropics as well as carbon stock annual dynamics for the duration of the mission. Given regional observational limitation, BIOMASS data will not reach global coverage, but complementarity with contemporaneous missions, such as GEDI and NISAR, will overcome such limitation. Here, BIOMASS is put in perspective of current analysis of AGB dynamics using modelling and Earth observation to understand carbon dynamics and process representation.
