The importance of land use for soil carbon storage: Examples from the Biodiversity Exploratories

Many studies suggest that intensive land use results in less carbon being stored in the soil. However, there are few studies that have examined this in real world ecosystems. In my presentation, I will show results from 300 experimental plots of the Biodiversity Exploratories where the effect of forest and grassland management intensity on soil carbon storage was investigated. In the forest, harvesting decreased and the selection of tree species with higher CN ratio increased carbon stocks in the organic layer. Effects of forest management on carbon stocks in the upper mineral soil were not detected. In contrast to the forest, carbon stocks in grassland topsoils increased as a result of fertilization. Overall, our field study with forest and grassland soils could only partly confirm our initial hypothesis that intensive land use reduces carbon stocks in soils.
