Forest dynamics and species coexistence: The importance of small-scale disturbances and competition for light in forest structure and diversity

Forests are complex dynamical systems and can be very challenging to study and even more challenging to predict. In this talk we will discuss a few consistent patterns that emerge from forests and use integrated methods of theory and observational data analysis to try to uncover the mechanisms that generate them. Specifically, we will talk about (1) the coexistence of early and late successional tree strategies and (2) the consistencies and differences in emergent patterns of forest structure from tropical to temperate forests.
