An international team of researchers studying a semi-arid savannah ecosystem found that nitrogen inputs alone make plants grow better, but also lead to greater water consumption. If, on the other hand, nitrogen and phosphorus are supplied at the same time, the stronger growth and increased carbon uptake do not result in greater water requirements.
