The prize, which is awarded regularly by the City of Leipzig, the University of Leipzig and the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig, honors work that meets the highest scientific standards and consolidates Leipzig's reputation as a city of science with a nationally and internationally weighty research and educational landscape. Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung commented: "With Professor Christian Wirth, we are honoring an outstanding scientist this year who embodies the aim of the Leipzig Science Prize in the best sense: As speaker of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research, Christian Wirth has established a beacon of excellent science in our city that carries Leipzig's reputation as a city of science out into the world and at the same time attracts many bright minds to Leipzig. With the iDiv, the Botanical Garden or the Leipzig Auwald Crane, Christian Wirth also succeeds in communicating research on biodiversity to our urban society and getting many people excited about this highly topical subject."
The MPI-BGC is extremely pleased to honor our MP Fellow and wishes him all the best for the future!
