Remote sensing of plant functional diversity

Biodiversity conservation lacks a global monitoring system. Remote sensing offers synoptic and continuous Earth surface data and has increased efforts to infer biodiversity in the last few years. However, the empirical and local nature of the first studies has limited understanding of the limits and potential of remote sensing to capture different aspects of plant functional diversity. Combining radiative transfer simulations and observations, we have analyzed different metrics, sensor features, and analysis scales to answer foundational questions in this field. In addition, we have proposed new metrics that increase the comparability of different datasets (e.g., remote sensing missions and/or field campaigns).
