Towards reducing uncertainties of global evapotranspiration due to the energy balance closure gap in flux tower data

Eddy covariance provides continuous evapotranspiration measurements at ecosystem scales, but at most sites there is an energy imbalance problem, with measured turbulent fluxes (sensible and latent heat fluxes) falling short of available energy (net radiation minus soil heat). This imbalance is mainly due to instrument bias and assumptions in the eddy covariance methodology, etc. In this presentation, a generalized framework to correct for known measurement bias (relative humidity and large-scale circulation associated bias) in eddy covariance data will be introduced. Some new results will be presented regarding the bias partitioning, providing a framework to ensure more accurate sensible heat and latent heat flux estimates via the FLUXCOM approach.
