Methodological challenges and new perspectives of shifting vegetation phenology
While numerous studies report shifts in vegetation phenology, there is no general consensus on optimal methodologies for data smoothing and extracting phenological transition dates. Here, we revisit existing methodologies and present new prospects to investigate phenological changes. This study shows trends are variable when different methods are used to define phenological transition dates, outlining reasonable concerns about using a single method. The relationship of trends reveals an association between advanced spring and delayed autumn to increase in immediate primary productivity, but not to the overall seasonal productivity. Drawing on these analyses, we further emphasize abstaining from subjective choices and investigating the relationship of the phenological trend to finer temporal trends of vegetation indices. I will additionally present the ongoing work on the global patterns in phenological changes and their relation to carbon uptake and changes in the ecosystem's biophysical properties.
