Carbonyl sulphide uptake on the ATTO plateau

Carbonyl sulphide has potential as a tracer of gross primary productivity. However, its use as such at the ecosystem scale requires us to understand something about its atmospheric dynamics and the distribution of its sources and sinks within the environment of interest. Very little is known about the terra firme forests of the central Amazon in this context. Here we report on work in progress to measure atmospheric profiles of carbonyl sulphide from a 80 m tower and in soil chambers at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory in Amazonas, Brasil. Fluxes derived from these measurements provide a first look at the uptake of carbonyl sulphide by this ecosystem and the underlying processes involved.
