Terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change depend on the feedbacks between plants and soils. In recent years important advances have been made to improve our knowledge of how climate change will affect forest ecosystems, mainly by assessing tree and soil responses individually. However, climate change does not affect aboveground and belowground components of forest ecosystems separately, but it induces a series of interconnected effects that act synergistically on the biological interactions between plants and soils. In this talk I will present experimental and observational evidence illustrating how the carbon and nutrient cycling in forests is controlled by the interplay of plant and soil processes and how it will be influenced by a changing climate.
