Climate research in the Climate Pavilion

This spring and summer, the Climate Pavilion of the Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation will be the central venue for climate topics. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry will participate with lectures, discussions, films, and a photo exhibition.

The lectures from the MPI for Biogeochemistry will be kicked off on 24 May 2019 by Director Markus Reichstein. He will talk about
"Climate extremes and their impact on ecosystems and society".

Current climate change is accompanied by changes in climate and weather extremes and is expected to continue in the future. The lecture will shed light on the manifold effects on ecosystems and societies. It will be shown that dry seasons such as the summer of 2018 play an important role and must be taken into account in adaptation strategies.

On Saturday, 08 June 2019, Henrik Hartmann will give a lecture on
"Climate-induced forest decline".

Climate change is also affecting trees: Henrik Hartmann shows what this means and highlights the importance of forests for the Earth system. The lecture will also touch the fascination of forests, including the tight relationship of Germans to forests. Using the bark beetle as an example, it will be demonstrated that the forest is far from being fully researched. The presentation, including impressive picture material, highlights how global forests are threatened by climate change.

The photo exhibition "ICOS", which can be seen in the Climate Pavilion from Wednesday, 26 June 2019 to Sunday, 30 June 2019, conveys impressions of extraordinary measuring stations from all over Europe.

The Integrated Carbon Observation System "ICOS" is a Europe-wide network for the standardized measurement of greenhouse gases and changes in ecosystems. In short films, researchers explain the goals of ICOS. Employees of the central ICOS laboratory in Jena show how they work to reliably identify long-term trends.



On Thursday, June 27, 2019, Armin Jordan will present
"High-precision measurements of greenhouse gases for an overall balance of Europe".

CO₂ and other greenhouse gases are constantly increasing in the atmosphere. At the same time, climate changes influence ecosystems in their capacity to absorb or release greenhouse gases. These relationships and their effects on the climate are still inadequately researched. We learn how ICOS contributes to the clarification of these issues with measurements on land, at sea and in the air.

Jost Lavric will give a talk with slide show on Thursday, 22 August 2019 entitled
"High above for climate research in the Amazon".

The Amazon is of vital importance for the global climate and the water cycle in South America. At the "Amazon Tall Tower Observatory" (ATTO; www.attoproject.org), in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, our measuring tower rises 325 meters far above the canopy. We investigate the functioning and changes of this ecosystem, characterized by the complex interaction between organisms, vegetation, soil and air, in a large German-Brazilian cooperation project.
