Investigating degrading permafrost using Eddy Covariance Method and Large Eddy Simulation

Recently, Armstrong McKay et al. (2022, Science) emphasized the urgency of improving our understanding of thawing permafrost. Its degradation and the associated climate feedback pose a potential tipping element that might be reached within 1.5 °C global warming. We study the process of degradation of arctic permafrost with two methods. 1) Almost 9 years of flux tower data from Cherskii, North-east Siberia are analyzed with the Eddy Covariance Method. Two towers were installed on the site. One has a permafrost patch in its footprint which was artificially degraded by means of man-made drainage; the other serves as an unaltered reference. 2) We simulate the effect of the degrading permafrost on the atmospheric boundary layer in terms of Large Eddy Simulations. This method sheds light on the feedback mechanisms between permafrost and atmosphere.
