Terrestrial nitrogen-carbon cycle interactions at the global scale
Anthropogenic reactive nitrogen creation has enriched the terrestrial biosphere with nitrogen, and at the same time increased carbon storage on land. Future terrestrial carbon uptake will nonetheless be limited by natural nitrogen availability, which by far outweighs the effects of future anthropogenic nitrogen additions. A further effect of nitrogen cycling on climate is caused by the amplified emission of NOx and N2O from terrestrial soils due to anthropogenic nitrogen inputs and climate change. However, the net climatic effect of the anthropogenic perturbation of the nitrogen cycle is still unknown.
