Description, History

The tasks of ATTO will be to yield pathbreaking knowledge and principles for better climate models. the scientists hope to understand the sources of greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide or methane. Furthermore is planned to collect weather data and to investigate the formation of aerosol particles, which are importan to understand the accumulation of clouds.

Since 2011 existing towers near Manaus are already collecting data, such as weather, ozone, carbon dioxide as well as nitrogen-containing trace gases. With the new higher tower it is now possible to investigate all these matters on a much longer range. The horizontal transport of air masses and their change caused by wood/vegetation over many hundret kilometers can be investigated.

The project will be financed with around 8,4 million euro by the research ministries of both countries.

Since 2009 the group fields experiments and instrumentation is involved in the project in an advisory role.

Since 2015 the group is responsible for the design and planning of technial infrastructure (such as energy and data distribution, lightning protection, grounding, UPS systems; Martin Hertel and Karl Kübler) on and around the tower. And our work contributes to basic micrometeorological equipment as well as Eddy-covariance-systems (Olaf Kolle).

Since 2016 we are involved in assembling and installation of equipment on the spot.

Prof. Susan Trumbore has been coordinating the tower project on the German side since April 2017.
