PAGE21 : Changing Permafrost in the Arctic and its Global Effects in the 21st century

  • general info: The EU-funded collaborative project PAGE21 aims to understand and quantify the vulnerability of permafrost environments to a changing global climate, and to investigate the feedback mechanisms associated with increasing greenhouse gas emissions from permafrost zones.

  • Our role: As part of work package #4 "Carbon and Nitrogen emissions from permafrost", we will collect data on recent carbon exchange processes between permafrost ecosystems and atmosphere in Northeastern Siberia (Chersky)

CarboPerm : Kohlenstoff im Permafrost: Bildung, Umwandlung und Freisetzung

  • general info: The Russian-German collaborative project CarboPerm builds on a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate the generation, transformation and release of organic carbon in permafrost ecosystems.
  • Our role: As part of workpackage #4 "recent carbon dynamics in permafrost ecosystems", in close collaboration with the University of Hamburg our group will conduct field experiments in Northeastern Siberia. A strong focus of this work will be placed on the establishment of a multi-sensor observation network to capture the spatiotemporal variability of carbon fluxes at scales ranging from meters to tens of kilometers, and to use this information to develop upscaling procedures from in-situ measurements to the grid scale of general circulation models.

A CO2 Observation Network in the Pacific Northwest U.S. for Modeling Regional CO2 Flux Variability

  • general info: This NOAA-funded project aims to improve understanding of the mechanisms driving carbon exchange processes and associated uncertainties on the regional scale, focusing on the state of Oregon in the Northwestern US.
  • Our role: development and application of a high-resolution data assimilation system with regional atmospheric inverse modeling

Surface Containment Monitoring for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

  • general info: This project, funded by Natural Resources Canada and industrial partners, will develop and test monitoring systems at industrial CCS sites in Canada, with the objective to develop clear recommendations for surface monitoring, verification and accounting of injected fossil fuel CO2.
  • Our role: Supervision of atmospheric monitoring, atmospheric dispersion simulations for signal to noise interpretation and leak detection.
