Am MPI-BGC wurden unter der Leitung von Dr. Christoph Gerbig ab 2005 mehrere Projekte für die Realisierung der IAGOS-Infrastruktur durchgeführt. Das Team entwickelte insbesondere das System für die gleichzeitige Erfassung der Treibhausgase Kohlendioxid (CO2), Methan (CH4), Kohlenmonoxid (CO) und Wasser für eine kontinuierliche Anwendung an Linienflugzeugen.
Die Quellen und Senken von Treibhausgasen in Deutschland sollen zukünftig besser erfasst und überwacht werden. Das ist das Ziel des Integrierten Treibhausgas-Monitoringsystems (ITMS) für Deutschland, das offiziell mit einem dreitägigen Meeting vom 18. bis 20. Oktober 2022 am Max-Planck-Institut für Biogeochemie (MPI-BGC) in Jena gestartet wurde. Das vom BMBF geförderte ITMS soll der Bundesregierung und der Öffentlichkeit gesicherte Informationen zu Stand und Entwicklung der Treibhausgasflüsse zur Verfügung stellen.
Im August und September 2022 ist das Forschungsflugzeug HALO über Kanada im Einsatz. Mit von der Partie ist Dr. habil. Christoph Gerbig, Gruppenleiter am MPI für Biogeochemie. Zusammen mit Forschenden vom DLR, der Uni Bremen und der LMU München wollen die Wissenschaftler*innen mehr über die natürlichen und anthropogenen Quellen und Senken von Methan und Kohlenstoffdioxid herausfinden. Im Rahmen der CoMet 2.0 Arctic-Mission werden auch neue Instrumente für die Messung von Treibhausgasen getestet.
Wissenschaftlern ist es gelungen, Veränderungen der Kohlendioxidemissionen aus fossilen Brennstoffen sehr viel schneller als zuvor zu erfassen. Mit einer neuen Methode kombinierten sie atmosphärische Messungen von Kohlendioxid (CO2) und Sauerstoff (O2). So konnten sie zwischen natürlichen CO2-Abgaben der Landoberfläche und denen aus fossilen Brennstoffen unterscheiden.
