Die Menge an Kohlenstoff, die von den Landökosystemen der Erde aufgenommen wird, schwankt von Jahr zu Jahr. Diese Schwankungen werden in erster Linie durch Veränderungen der Bodenfeuchte angetrieben. Überraschenderweise wirkt sich die Bodenfeuchte vor allem indirekt auf die Kohlenstoffaufnahme der Pflanzen und Böden aus, indem sie die bodennahe Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit beeinflusst.
Im Who's Who der weltweit hoch-zitierten Forscher sind 2019 erstmalig sogar sechs Wissenschaftler unseres Max-Planck-Instituts für Biogeochemie (MPI-BGC) auf verschiedenen Karrierestufen vertreten. Damit gehört das MPI-BGC erneut zu den Top-Ten der Max-Planck-Institute mit hoch-zitierten Forschern.
